In partnership with Hospitalfield (UK) and Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (UK), British Council Lebanon has offered the opportunity for two selected artists from the CATAPULT.visual’arts programme to participate in a four-week residency in Scotland between August 8th and September 5th, 2022. The jury composed of Marc Mouarkech (Arts and Culture Programmes Manager – British Council Lebanon), Cicely Farrer (Programmes and Communications Manager – Hospitalfield), and Dan Brown (Curator – Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop) have selected Elias Nafaa and Laetitia El Hakim through an open call that is limited to the programme’s participants.

The residency began at Hospitalfield, an artists’ house and arts organisation based on the North East Coast of Scotland off the North Sea. The artists joined the Interdisciplinary programme – an international programme of artists practicing in the visual arts as well as dance, music and literature, facilitated both critically and practically by the team at Hospitalfield and involved sharing of practice, studio visits, group walks and access to the historic House. During the residency, there will was an exhibition of work by Eduardo Paolozzi. The second two weeks were at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (ESW) and coincided with the Edinburgh International Festival. The artists had access to specialised facilities at the workshop and had the opportunity to exchange with artists in the community, the Youth Bursary participants and staff. At that time, ESW was hosting two ongoing exhibitions for works by artists Ashanti Harris and Calum Craik.

The organisations have worked with the selected artists to tailor their residencies according to their research interests, what they wished to learn and who they liked to meet while in Scotland.
