The ‘New Writing for Theatre’ has been one of our most successful Arts programmes in the region in partnership with the Royal Court in the UK.
In its first version, the programme worked with 15 talented Arab writers to develop their skills and texts through a series of residencies and mentoring by the Royal Court team. As a result, most participants were able to showcase their work in Lebanon and worldwide.
In 2014, the programme is working with 12 young writers (5 from Lebanon) based on an open call to attend a residency in Lebanon including tutoring from established writers followed by readings and publishing of their work.
Following the model of the New Writing for Theatre, the British Council is seeking to develop other pilot programmes to support creative writers in the field of music, cinema, and literature. Our work in this area will reflect on the arts scene in Lebanon in different ways as most art forms include elements of writing.
